BIELAK PITCHES GEM AS ASTROS EDGE ROCKIES; PADRES BOMB RANGERS

Carlos Correa ripped a two-run double in the first inning and the lead held up as the Astros edged Colorado, 2-1, Monday night.

Brandon Bielak

Brandon Bielak (3-0) was nearly unhittable over six innings, yielding just a solo homerun to Rockies’ shortstop Trevor Story in the third.  It was the only hit Bielak gave up in the outing.

Bielak then gave way to three Astros’ relievers who shut down the Rockies the rest of the way.  Blake Taylor pitched a scoreless ninth inning to notch his first save.

The Astros and Rockies will meet this afternoon at 2:10 at Minute Maid Park, before heading to Denver for games Wednesday and Thursday.

Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in seven runs with a pair of homers, including a grand slam, as San Diego crushed the Rangers, 14-4.

The Padres scored five runs in the second inning and had built up a 7-0 lead, by the time the Rangers got on the board with a two-run double by Roughned Odor.  Joey Gallo’s run-scoring double cut the lead to 7-3 before Tatis’ homers in the 7th and 8th blew the game open.

The Padres’ shortstop now leads the majors with 11 home runs, one more than Mike Trout.

The Rangers and Padres square off in a matinee Tuesday, at 3:05 at Globe Life Park in Arlington
