BURTON SCHOOL BOARD TO CONSIDER STAFF INCENTIVE PAY

The Burton School Board will consider approving staff incentive pay at its meeting Monday.

Members of the Burton School Board hold an in-person meeting in March. Monday's meeting will be held virtually.

According to Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy, the district is working closely with its auditors to see if its fund balance will allow a one-time COVID-19 stipend for staff members.

Dr. Kennedy said the stipend would be used to reward staff members for their “extra-valiant efforts in educating our students above and beyond the norm.”  She said the business office is putting together figures for consideration.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the board will canvass results from Tuesday’s election and swear in the newly elected members to the board: incumbent Misty Lucherk, Dean Fuchs, and Donna Boehnemann Putnam.  It will also officially accept the resignation of trustee Tracey Cox, who announced in October that she would be moving out of the district.

Trustees will also consider a payoff of Burton State Bank bus loans, along with a custodial services proposal.  They will also hold a public hearing on the annual school FIRST financial accountability rating for Burton ISD.

The board will also hear reports from the superintendent, elementary and high school principals, and athletic director.  It will then potentially meet in executive session to discuss personnel and district safety and security.

The board will meet Monday evening at 6 p.m.  The meeting can be accessed using the information below.  Anyone looking to submit public comments must do so by emailing ekennedy@stu.burtonisd.net between 5:15 and 5:45 p.m. Monday evening to be included in the meeting.

  1. If any Board member would like an unbiased evaluation on the pros and cons of a small, rural district hiring a custodial service, they can contact Education Service Center and ask them to conduct a review. In fact, the district probably has a contract with ESC6 to solicit contracts on behalf of the district. The ESC would review the needs of the district. It would then write a Request for Proposals. This would be posted on a site available to all custodial service companies in a defined area to Burton ISD. It would List the requirements, square footage, maps of buildings, equipment needs and any other needs of the district to meet their needs. It would be posted for a specific time. The bids would go to ESC 6. They could compare the bids and costs for the Board. They could present the best options for the Board. They could provide an expected yearly cost and compare it to what you have now. They would be able to answer all questions Truthfully on liability, supervision and more. Certainly worth avoiding making a terrible mistake.
Meanwhile, up to three Board Members could Meet with the current custodial staff to determine if they have had ANY conversations with the superintendent regarding this move. Maybe they could inform you as why the sudden interest in this move. They would also be able to confirm or deny the claim that they were informed by the superintendent of this move Prior to the last Board meeting.
