UNITY THEATRE CANCELS PRODUCTION OF “THE GAME’S AFOOT”
Unity Theatre in Brenham has cancelled its upcoming holiday production of Ken Ludwig’s The Games Afoot.
Unity Theatre Executive Artistic Director Kate Revnell-Smith said the current uncertain outlook and recent increase in COVID-19 cases has made it clear that the theatre must “err on the side of caution.” She said she is “simply not comfortable with putting eight cast members on stage together at this time,” and that “the risk is just not worth taking.”
The comedy was scheduled to play at Unity Theatre December 3-20.
Revnell-Smith said the theatre was able to successfully produce Mark Twain’s The Diaries of Adam and Eve, but that was largely due to the two actors being a married couple. The show was also originally scheduled to play in Unity’s studio theatre on a smaller budget, so transferring the production to the main stage to accommodate social distancing resulted in minimal financial loss. However, she said it is “not feasible financially to gamble such a large loss at this time” with the larger production of The Game’s Afoot.
Revnell-Smith said she remains “cautiously optimistic” that the theatre’s upcoming production of Ben Butler by Richard Strand will proceed with rehearsals in January before taking the stage in February.
Unity Theatre offered a “Forever Subscription” for the first time this season, allowing subscribers to carry over any tickets for a cancelled performance into a future show or season.
