WASHINGTON CO. BIRTH, DEATH TOTALS IN 2020 RELEASED

The office of Washington County Clerk Beth Rothermel has released data on the recorded total of births and deaths from 2020.

According to Rothermel, as of Sunday, 269 births were reported and filed last year.  In comparison, 227 births were reported in 2019, which was the lowest recorded number for the county since 1995, when Rothermel began working as county clerk.

The county recorded 351 deaths as of Sunday, up from 277 deaths in 2019.

Baylor Scott and White’s Labor and Delivery Department is now fully staffed after two new OB/GYNs, Dr. Vanessa Sarfoh and Dr. Christina Prendergast, joined Dr. Aaron Campbell last year.  Dr. Prendergast, who began working August 24th, said she is excited about what this means for babies born in Brenham this year.

The highest number of births in any year, during Rothermel’s time as county clerk, was 507 in 2008.  The highest number of deaths was 362 in 2014.

Other 2020 statistics recorded so far by the county clerk’s office include 220 marriage licenses sold, 7,753 official public records filed, and 23,564 registered voters as of December 31st.

Rothermel noted that 2020’s numbers for births and deaths will likely increase as the year progresses, as sometimes it takes a few days or weeks for all of the paperwork to be completed with them.
