BUC VOLLEYBALL GOES TO 5-0 WITH TWO WINS, SATURDAY

Buccaneers sweep Western Texas and Arizona Western

 

SNYDER, Texas — The Blinn College volleyball team (5-0) swept Western Texas College and Arizona Western College to conclude the Western Texas College Tournament Saturday. First, the Buccaneers defeated Western Texas, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-10), before sweeping Arizona Western, 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-8).

With the pair of wins, the Buccaneers improve their overall record to 5-0.

“I am really proud of how we played today, especially in the second match against Arizona Western,” head coach Terry Gamble said. “We had good ball control which led to having a good offense in transition. If we keep working hard and improving, I think we have a chance to be really good.”

Blinn 3 – Western Texas 0

The Buccaneers started the day with a sweep over Western Texas.

Chard’e Vanzandt led the Buccaneers with a .556 hitting percentage, while Jayde Shelton led Blinn with 12 kills and hit .333. Essence Clerkley recorded six kills, three blocks, and hit .455. Loren Scott led Blinn with 26 assists.

On defense, Kyndal Coufal led with 13 digs, Lixai Perez Velez followed with 12, and Tatum Smidovec had 10.

The Buccaneers pounced on Western Texas early for a 25-12 win. Blinn won the second set 25-15 to pull ahead in the match 2-0. The Buccaneers concluded the match with a 25-10 win for the sweep.

 

Blinn 3 – Arizona Western 0

The Buccaneers finished the tournament undefeated with a sweep over Arizona Western.

The Buccaneers averaged a .471 hitting percentage in the match. Scott led Blinn with a .700 hitting percentage, 25 assists and 11 digs. Shelton hit .591 and led Blinn with 13 kills, while Clerkley hit .545 for seven kills and led Blinn with five blocks.

Blinn set an early tone with a 25-10 win to open the match. Arizona Western and Blinn played a closer second set, but the Buccaneers came up with a 25-17 victory. Blinn had its biggest win of the day when the Buccaneers beat Arizona Western 25-8 in the third set to claim the sweep.

Next, the Buccaneers will compete against Cisco College on the road Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m.
