SUSAN CANTEY NOT RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION TO BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL

Brenham City Councilmember Susan Cantey has announced she will not seek re-election in May.

Cantey began serving as At-Large Position Six Councilmember in 2017 after an uncontested race.

Cantey, who is 88, says she does not want to make another four-year commitment to the council at her age.  She says she has greatly enjoyed her time on the council, but believes younger people need to have the opportunity to serve.

Susan and her late husband Craig became active in Brenham in 1978 when they purchased three buildings in downtown, along with Botts Title Company.  She has served on the Brenham Main Street Board, Trinity Hospital Foundation Board, Unity Theatre Board, Animal Friends of Washington County Board, and as Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce.  She was named Woman of the Year in 2000.

Leah Cook has filed for the position currently held by Cantey.

Next Friday, February 12th is the last day to file for a place on the ballot, while Tuesday, February 16th is the last day to declare write-in candidacy.  Election Day is Saturday, May 1st.
