BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER LEASING FORMER RECYCLING CENTER PROPERTY

The property that once held the Brenham Recycling Center may soon have a new use.

The Brenham City Council will meet on Thursday to consider an agreement to lease the property, located at 307 South Market Street, to Woodson Lumber Company.  According to the proposed lease agreement, the company is seeking to use the property for loading and unloading product and materials, as well as outdoor storage of various building materials.

The property has sat vacant and unused since the closing of the recycling center in May 2020, after the city entered into a new sanitation agreement with Brannon Industrial Group.  As part of the agreement, recycling operations moved to the collection station at 2009 Old Chappell Hill Road.

The agenda packet for Thursday says representatives from Woodson Lumber Company reached out to the city several weeks ago to express their interest in leasing the property.

The proposed lease agreement is for a one-year term, with an option to renew for three additional one-year periods.  Per the agreement, Woodson Lumber Company would pay $1,500 per month, and would be responsible for all utilities, improvements, and facility maintenance.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the council will consider:

  • Quotes related to repairs at the Lake Somerville intake pump station #1. The city says crews found excessive vibration at the pump during an inspection, and staff are recommending the pump be removed from service to make necessary repairs.
  • Amending a chapter of the city’s code of ordinances in relation to the transition to online payment of hotel occupancy taxes.
  • A bid from for mowing, maintenance and clean-up services for various city buildings, public properties and parking lot areas.
  • A resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to the Texas Department of Agriculture for the Community Development Block Grant Program for Rural Texas.

The council will meet Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.
