An official Texas Historical Marker now honors the residents of Washington County who served during World War I.

Dozens gathered at the Veterans Plaza at Fireman’s Park this (Monday) morning to celebrate the dedication of the marker, which recognizes the service members and volunteers in the war that resided in Washington County.

Brenham VFW Post 7104 Commander Ben Seeker said this marker acts as a tribute to their service.

According to Seeker, over 1,100 men from Washington County enlisted during World War I, and many other county residents volunteered in various ways to aid the war effort.  Out of roughly 100,000 Americans who died during the war, at least 51 were from Washington County.

Several local dignitaries were in attendance at the ceremony, including County Judge John Durrenberger, Brenham Mayor Milton Tate, members of the Brenham City Council and Washington County Commissioners Court, State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, and Deputy District Director Leigh Linden from the office of State Representative Ben Leman.

The ceremony was presented by the Washington County Historical Commission and Washington County Veterans Association.
