BRENHAM PET ADOPTION CENTER SEEKING HOMES FOR PETS AMID POPULATION BOOM

  

The Brenham Pet Adoption Center is quickly filling up.

Brenham Animal Services Manager Allison Harper says the shelter’s population has nearly doubled over the past few weeks, jumping from around 45 animals between March and May to 80 animals as of this week.

Harper says while many people may think that pets adopted during the pandemic are being returned, leading to overcrowded animal shelters, there is data indicating that is not the case.

 

Harper attributes the increase to a delayed start to “kitten and puppy season” because of the winter storm in February, and now there is an abundance of puppies and kittens who are not yet old enough for adoption.  She says this makes it very important to find homes for the shelter’s long-time residents, especially the ones who need more individual care due to special conditions.

According to Harper, the shelter was at its highest population in the spring of 2019, when it was caring for 138 animals.  At that time, some animals had to be housed in the shelter’s lobby.

Harper says there are several options available for people interested in adoption or fostering.  The shelter is also seeking donations.
