CALDWELL AND HEMPSTEAD LOOK TO REBOUND IN AREA 3A FOOTBALL
The Caldwell Hornets and Hempstead Bobcats will be looking to reverse their fortunes in 2021, after the two area 3A teams combined for just two wins in 2020.
Both teams will be trying to rebuild with new head coaches running their programs.
Former Snook head coach Boone Patterson takes over an experienced Hornets squad, with eight starters on offense and seven on defense returning from 2020 (2-8/0-6).
The offensive line will be led by returning all-district tackle Garrett Tittle (6-0, 280) and tight end Tyson Drgac (6-3, 220). The ground game should feature returning back Jamar Hewitt (over 600 yds. total offense), while Tre Burns (702 receiving yards) should be the prime target for quarterback Ryan Roehling, who threw for over 1100 yards.
Defensively, where the Hornets gave up an average 39 points per game, returning linebacker Laramie Pieper will help try to lead a resurgence.
The Bobcats, winless in 2020, are under the leadership of new head coach Donovan King, who was the defensive coordinator at Coldspring.
King will try to build some confidence in a program that hasn’t has a winning season since 2015.
The team does have quite a bit of varsity experience, with 10 starters on each side of the ball and 34 lettermen returning, including three-year starting quarterback Anreas Compean and returning tailback Roman Middleton. Sophomore Floyd Ragston could make an impact on both sides of the ball.
