WASHINGTON CO. FAIR EXHIBIT OPENING AT BRENHAM HERITAGE MUSEUM BUS DEPOT GALLERY

A new exhibit celebrating the oldest county fair in Texas is opening at the Brenham Heritage Museum.

The Day at the Fair exhibit opens today (Saturday) and will remain in place into January 2022.  All exhibits are being mounted in the Bus Depot Gallery off Alamo Street at Clinton Street, while the old post office building undergoes restoration.

More than a dozen aspects of the Washington County Fair are included in the exhibit, which recalls parades, rodeos, grand champions and fireworks from fairs in years past.  One exhibit case pays tribute to the volunteers of the Washington County Fair Association, which has organized the event since its inception in 1868.

Many artifacts for the exhibit were donated by the Fair Association, while others are from the museum’s own collection or on loan from individuals.  Some vintage photos from the Winkelmann collection, now housed at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas in Austin, are also on display.

The Bus Depot Gallery is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and other days by appointment.

The museum is currently engaged in a capital campaign.  To learn more, or to donate, visit www.brenhamheritagemuseum.org.

  1. Gillespie County has also, always claimed that title, “…oldest county fair…in Texas…” I guess a key word could be “..continuous..”? For trivia only – not trying to start a feud…
