Another edition of the Washington County Fair is in the books.

The 153rd installment of the fair came back in full force this year after 2020’s event was limited to exhibitors only.

Fair President Keith Mikolajchak said it was great to be able to return to a full fair setting.

The fair kicked off on Saturday, September 11th with the parade through downtown Brenham and continued with livestock judging the following week.

Opening ceremonies on Wednesday saw Emma Marth be crowned Washington County Fair Queen, after selling 2,608 tickets for $104,325.  Each of the four queen candidates sold 5,173 tickets for $206,910.  Kinsley Porche and Ayden Clay were named this year’s Little Miss and Little Mister, while Stevie Donnell was named Junior Miss and both Brazos Supak and Teagan Thompson were named Junior Mister.

Friday’s Junior Livestock Auction broke the total sales record set in 2019, as unofficial totals amounted to $922,247 for the 260 lots in the auction.  According to Mikolajchak, the commercial heifer sale on Saturday brought in over $1.2 million.

Meanwhile, a music lineup of The Anthony Moreno Band, Eliseo Robles, the Crossroads Band, Jon Stork, Kody West, Carson Jeffrey, Giovannie and the Hired Guns, Jason Boland and the Stragglers, Rick Trevino and Clay Walker entertained guests throughout the fair.

As planning begins for the 2022 fair, Mikolajchak said many people appreciated the addition of the video boards that broadcasted events happening around the fair, so those will likely continue to be used.

The Washington County Fair Association thanks the volunteers, sponsors, exhibitors, vendors and attendees for supporting the fair and making it possible each year.

KWHI and KTEX-106 also thank the community for their support, as the two stations raised a total of $885 from spins of the Wagon Wheel of Prizes during the fair.  All proceeds from the Wagon Wheel will go toward the victims of Hurricane Ida.

  1. I do have to say, that there is little to no activities for people that live paycheck to paycheck. Even going to the concerts downtown can get expensive if you choose to eat and drink there. The price for the tickets are expensive, especially if you have a family of four or more. I never have understood why they don’t have cheaper tickets and local artists play at the fair?

    1. Not really following your logic. Even a free concert is not cheap enough because the restaurants are open?
Are you saying they should close the restaurants for the event?

      1. No, that is not what I am saying. Why would you close the restaurants if others CAN afford to eat there? What I am saying is that if you chose to eat at most places downtown, it will cost you a fortune. It is good that some can afford to go to the free concert and also eat downtown, but many cannot. We usually eat before we go and then bring our own drinks.

  2. So what does the fair do with all the money? It certainly is not spent to improve the grounds. I think the sound system is from the 1950’s. In barn 1 you can only hear half of what is said. It cuts in and out. It’s worse in the barn where the bucket calf was held. There is no sound to the audience at all.

    1. The fair association rents the fair grounds or now called the expo from the county So the county need to step up but wait they don’t even now how to turn off the water in the building during the freeze. By the way Where is the new sign at the main entrance. Still has Washington county fair grounds. Not the expo

  3. You can satisfy some people all of the time and all the people sometimes and JD there are some people that should just stay home and JD there are some people that need to move to a new town and stop changing and ruining our small town. There’s your choices !

    1. Yes. You are correct. I hope you heed your own advice. That still doesn’t change the fact that it can, and does, get very expensive, very quick, taking everyone to the fair. Kids love it, adults with kids tolerate it.

  4. They really should call it the Washington County Unfair to Parents week.
We spent over $250 on the “free night” Tuesday, and the same, if not more, on Friday. The kids had “fun”, but come on man.
How is it that expensive for a medium to okay experience???
The main headlining performers were okay at best.
Seriously. Too much money for too little entertainment.
A few years ago it was Dwight Yoakam, now it was garbage.
    What happened???????‽????????????

      1. No. 2 adults and 2 kids to get in the gate, $40 to start. Then, 2 kids ride bracelets, $50.
$90 with no food, drinks, or anything else.
So, no, just a bit pricey.

        1. I know that it doesn’t sit well with some folks, but what J.D. is saying isn’t wrong. That’s a lot of money for ordinary people to pay for one night of family entertainment in Brenham, Texas.

          1. I thought JD said he went on “free night.” That means that he whould not have paid an entry fee at the gate, only for armbands at the carnival. (The fair association does not control the cost of armbands for the carnival.) So, did he go on Tuesday, “free night” or not? If he did, then he only spent $50, and that is a reasonable amount of money for a family night out.

        2. You obviously never take your family out much! The Washington County Board and volunteers work very hard all year to provide our community, with the best County Fair experience in the State of Texas. Anyone that has attended any other similar type of festival will tell you that you are going to have the same or probably increased expenditures. Four people going to the zoo, are amusement park will probably spend more. I am very thankful for everyone that came out to support the youth of this County.

          1. I totally agree Ray, Go to Horse Shoe Junction for a fun day, go to Dewberry Farms or the movies, go anywhere these days entertainment just costs more, no matter where we live. We are ALL very BLESSED to live in this wonderful county and very grateful and thankful for what the Washington County Fair does for our County and Youth. PLEASE STAY POSTIVE. There are enough negative issues in our world. Be thankful for what we do have!!!

        3. I just did a quick search for Clay Walker concert tickets. At a casino, which is probably subsidized a little because they know more people will gamble, they were $30 for the cheapest. At another, they were $50 for any ticket.
You take 4 people to that show and it’s $200 before you buy anything else.
Yes, the rides and food from the carnival are expensive, but they charge it because they can. You’re not going to find a charitable carnival.
I know it’s hard. Prices for everything are crazy. But the fair is not taking advantage of anyone.

    1. I guess you could afford going if you willingly spent $250 on the “free night”! So I take it you went back later in the week as you posted what it cost to get in? So obviously all you do is complain about things but never offer a solution like trying to get on a fair committee! Those kids put a lot of time and effort into their animals I for one appreciate all of the volunteers putting in long hours down there. Yes it is a costly expense to go there but you chose to go more than once so stop complaining about it!
