The City of Giddings has a new police chief.
William Weems has been named the Giddings Police Department’s new chief, ahead of the retirement of Haril Walpole at the end of this month.
Weems has been with the department since November 2020, but began his career in police work in 1989 when he joined the Army’s Military Police force in Panama. Since then, his career has included work with the University of Indianapolis Police Department, Indianapolis Airport Police Department and Avon Police Department, where he served 8 years as assistant chief.
As chief, Weems hopes to make some technological advances within the department and plans to further prioritize group training.
Weems says he did not initially have the intention of applying for the position, but he was encouraged to do so by his peers in the department. He says his time so far in Giddings has been outstanding.
Weems will be sworn in at a ceremony September 30th, and will officially begin his new role on October 1st.
