BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO DISCUSS SKYDIVING, RESTAURANT AT AIRPORT

A potential skydiving operation and a lease agreement for a new restaurant at the Brenham Municipal Airport are among Thursday’s topics of discussion for the Brenham City Council.

A work session will be held to discuss Skydive Freedom, who is interested in opening a skydiving business at the airport.  During the work session, councilmembers will review industry standards, best practices and procedures, flight protocols and the United States Parachute Association (USPA) certification for Skydive Freedom.  No action will be taken.

According to the agenda packet, the city is preparing a lease agreement with Skydive Freedom for a primary parachute landing zone to be located to the east of Aviation Way and in the undevelopable floodplain.  The agreement would include a one-year initial term with an automatic option to renew for a period of five years.  The lease agreement would require Skydive Freedom to maintain the 3.59 acre land lease.

The council will also consider a lease agreement with Canion Kountry Bakery and Restaurant to lease the restaurant portion of the terminal building at the airport.  In August 2020, Jack and Janet Hess of Southern Flyer terminated their contract with the city and vacated the building.

In May, the city issued a request for proposals for the terminal building and restaurant and the city-owned fuel farm.  No bids were received, but the city has received interest from different parties regarding the restaurant space, including Mindy Canion of Canion Kountry Bakery.

If approved, the initial term of the lease would be one year with the option to renew in one-year increments automatically for two years.  The lessee would pay annual rent of $6,000 for the first year, after which the lessee would pay annual rent and 3 percent of the net income from all food and beverage sales.  The restaurant must be open at least five days a week for eight hours a day, and the lessee would be responsible for all utilities and upkeep of the interior of the building.

Also on Thursday, the council will consider:

  • A license agreement between the city and 100 Alamo Investments, LLC to authorize a new staircase at the back of the Grand Leader Building at 100 East Alamo Street. The staircase would occupy one parallel parking space and requires a license to encroach.
  • A professional services agreement with Strand Associates, Inc. for engineering services related to the Blue Bell Aquatic Center therapy pool parking lot.
  • A temporary resale amendment to the system water availability agreement between the city and the Brazos River Authority.
  • A proposal for professional grant administration and/or planning services for the American Rescue Plan Act.
  • Consultation with the city attorney in executive session to discuss City of Brenham v. WTG Gas Marketing, Inc.; Cause No. 37573; 335th Judicial District Court, Washington County.

The council will meet Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.

  1. I would love to see skydiving in Brenham. I am from Connecticut, and followed the Monroe Skydiving club for years. Sunday afternoon shows and it becomes addictive. Also the restaurant reopening would be great.
