Danny Youngs was introduced Thursday night as the new leader of Brenham ISD athletics, after the Brenham School Board voted unanimously to approve his hiring.

Youngs most recently served as Head Football Coach at Brazoswood High School and has coached for 24 years, including eight years as Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach.  His wife, Mindy, is currently the Dean of Instruction at Brazoswood High School.  Youngs will start his new position next week, filling the role formerly held by Eliot Allen, who accepted the Athletic Director position in Bastrop ISD in January.

Youngs said being able to coach in Brenham is a special opportunity.

Prior to his time at Brazoswood High School, Youngs coached at Wichita Falls Hirschi, where he turned a 0-10 football program in 2015 into a state quarterfinalist in 2017 with an 11-3 record, followed by a 10-3 record and an appearance as regional finalist in 2018.

Youngs said the tradition of Brenham is what excites him the most about this position.

Youngs plans to make physicality a big part of Brenham Cub football.

  1. Mr. Ehlert in part you may be right about the Daddy Ball thing but from what I know the kids I’ve been around that have had to play for their dads were the ones putting in 2 to 3 times more work than the kids that only worried about their sport after they signed up for the season and it was about to be tryout time. Also with travel ball opportunities now that the kids have I would definitely say it is the culture created by whomever is supposed to be “leading” these young men and women!

  2. Maybe he’ll make some coaching changes in the other sports. I’ve seen a lot of kids play various sports growing up only to get into high school and quit because of the coaches.

    1. 3reds you’re right that does happen fairly often. The reason it does happen is their daddy was their coach before they got to high school and made think they were great even when they’re not. “Daddy Ball”.

    2. Kids quit playing for different reasons, but I also know of more than a couple that have quit their respective sport because of the childish environment created by the coaching staff! Kids need leaders not coaches that create a popularity contest within the locker room where there is supposed to be a “Team culture”!

    3. Lots off kids quit because they get burned out doing the sport. they being doing it so long as a kid with select ball and all the other programs out there

    4. Not EVERY student athlete has a “daddy” coach! The main problem with BISD athletics is pathetic conservative coaching along with inexperienced and unproven novice coaches with no idea how to coach. Coaching used to be a respectable profession but now is just an outlet for lazy college graduates who were mediocre athletes themselves, all looking for an easy paycheck. Coaches used to develop a team mentality with an emphasis on developing character and morals. Parents are now left to enroll their student athletes in expensive summer camps and training programs that DO DEVELOP skills way beyond what local ineffective coaching is able to produce. There is a talent pool to pull from; but, way too often this talent is not utilized to maximum greatness. What state title has BISD athletics won lately? What coach concerned about their resume and reputation would want to coach in Brenham? And that is the rest of the story!
