BURTON ISD TO FULLY REOPEN CAMPUSES FOR VISITORS
Burton ISD is now welcoming visitors back into schools.
During her report to the Burton School Board on Monday, Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy announced that the district will open campuses fully to allow parents and community members to attend student functions, activities and events. Visitors were restricted at schools at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago, but Dr. Kennedy explained that the district has not had any COVID-19 cases in over a month.
Dr. Kennedy said the district will continue to ask parents to remain in the car line to pick up their students at the elementary school in the afternoons. Parents or family members who plan to have breakfast or lunch with their child are asked to notify the office at least a day in advance to accommodate additional meals.
Dr. Kennedy also announced that Burton High School’s graduation ceremony, planned for Friday, May 20th at 8 p.m., will once again be held in the high school gym. She also said the district will offer an option for community members to connect through a Zoom link for future board meetings.
In other items, the board approved a certificate to acknowledge that incumbents Demetrius Colvin, Sr. and Jeff Harmel were the only candidates to file for the May 7th school board election, and passed an order to cancel the election.
Trustees also approved the purchase of a five-passenger 2022 Chevrolet Equinox for district use. The purchase comes to $22,667, using trade-in value from the district’s 2004 Chevrolet Suburban and grant funding.
Also at Monday’s meeting, the board:
- Approved an amended interlocal participation agreement with the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Risk Management Fund, going into effect May 1st.
- Approved contract extensions for 2022-23, including Jeremy Johnston, assistant principal; Angela Rhodes, counselor; Eddy Jezisek, instructional coach; Kristi Hess, special services cooperative director; Holly Horton, diagnostician; Michelle Ketrick, speech/language pathologist. Trustees also approved an offer to extend a contract to Kelly Ponce, a licensed specialist in school psychology.
