The Washington County Firefighters Association is cautioning residents of the potential for extreme fire weather this (Wednesday) afternoon.
A red flag warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for South Central Texas, including Washington and surrounding counties. The warning goes into effect today at 1 p.m. and continues until 7 p.m.
The National Weather Service says lowering relative humidities and elevated west winds this afternoon ahead of a cold front could create conditions favorable for a wildfire to quickly become uncontained, particularly with grass fires.
The Firefighters Association says that outdoor burning is not allowed again today per state statute, due to forecasted winds above the allowable limits.
After brief rain showers this morning, sunshine will return with temperatures in the lower 80s and west winds at 25-30 mph. Humidity values will drop into the lower 20s. These factors combined will allow grasses to dry and be receptive to ignition this afternoon.
