12TH ANNUAL FIRE & ICE COOK-OFF FRIDAY, SATURDAY IN INDEPENDENCE

The 12th Annual Fire and Ice Cook-off gets underway today (Friday) in Independence.

Teams will meet today and tomorrow (Saturday) on the Independence town square to see who makes the best barbecue, beans, chef’s choice and margaritas.

Mark Rosenbaum of Independence Community Events says the cook-off raises funds for the restoration of the old school house.

Contestants must be in place by 7 p.m. tonight.  Meat inspection starts at 4 p.m. and must be complete by 7 p.m.

The steak shoot-out contest features a first place prize of $1,000, sponsored by Southern Star Trucking and Brenham Iron Works.  Second place will win $500, sponsored by Cattleman’s Brenham Livestock Auction, and third place will receive $250, sponsored by Schulte Cattle Company.

There will also be contests and prizes for margaritas, beans, jackpot chef’s choice, brisket, pork ribs, and chicken.
