The woman who was injured earlier this month during an explosion that destroyed the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn has died.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the victim, identified separately as Verlene Ann Kuntschik, died Monday morning.

Kuntschik had been in the intensive care unit at Dell Seton Hospital in Austin since the explosion and fire at the church on June 9th.  Kuntschik was a parishioner; according to the Fayette County Record, she was at the church preparing for 7 a.m. Mass when the explosion occurred.

While investigation continues into what triggered the explosion, it is believed to have been caused by a gas leak.

Relief fund accounts have been set up at Fayette Savings Bank for Kuntschik and to help rebuild the church.

  1. gas company should be held accountable, and lighter manufacturers especially. they literally murdered this person…

    1. Murder means the intent was to kill. The gas company did not intend to kill this woman. And exactly what do the lighter companies have to do with it? Please elaborate.

      1. It seems to me that this was an accident pure and simple. Nobody intended to hurt this poor woman. And I’m so very sorry for Mrs. Verlene and her family! May she Rest In Peace now! But to say someone should be held accountable! Especially the lighter company! That’s just plain stupid! And it certainly won’t bring her back now will it? My thoughts and prayers are with her family!

  2. To Verleen family, I have so many beautiful memories of Mrs Verleen, I have admired for years, she is a beautiful woman inside and out. The Kallus family are praying for your other family and friends. May our Precious God send the Holy Spirt to hold you close and comfort you all. She will be so very missed.
