BRENHAM PET ADOPTION CENTER AT 85 PERCENT CAPACITY; ANIMAL INTAKE LIMITED TO EMERGENCIES

The Brenham Pet Adoption Center is almost full.

The City of Brenham says the shelter is at 85 percent capacity as of Wednesday.  Shelter officials say once it reaches 75 percent, pets begin showing physical and mental health issues due to stress.

The shelter is now limiting the intake of animals and strays to emergencies only.

Animal Services Manager Allison Harper says the community’s help is needed during this time when adoptions are low nationwide.

Anyone looking to adopt a pet from the shelter can go to the city’s Petfinder page at www.petfinder.com.  For those with animals they can no longer keep, they are encouraged to use the self re-homing page, https://home-home.org.

The center reminds pet owners to ensure their pets are wearing IDs if they were to get out.  It says most stray animals are within 100 feet of their home, but only 10 percent are reclaimed once brought to the shelter.

People who take their pets to the shelter are also asked for patience, as general operations have been modified due to the full capacity.
