Roberts earned his spot on varsity as a freshman, but he didn't see much playing time early in the season. After Jermaine Smith broke his leg in the ninth game of the season, and Roberts became the No. 2 running back and led the Cubs in rushing in the state title game against Denton Ryan. His sophomore season never had a chance to get off the ground, after breaking his collarbone against Lamar Consolidated.

During his senior year, Roberts ran for 984 yards and 15 touchdowns during the regular season, and finished with 1,547 yards and 21 touchdowns, fifth best the Cubs history. Michael Watts and his older brother, Robert, began participating in sports at a very young age and developed life-long friends while growing up in the Washington County community.
During his athletic career at Brenham High School, Watts was an all sports player. By his sophomore year, he was a starting varsity player in football, basketball and baseball.
As a sophomore, he made all-district as a cornerback, then as a junior, Watts was named the second team all-district football team as a linebacker while earning all-district in baseball. During his senior year, Watts served as captain of the Brenham Cub football team and earned first team all-district honors as a fullback. The same year, he was named to the first team all-district and first team all-state in baseball. Watts still holds the state record for hitting two triples in one game during the state tournament. He was also a member of the Brenham Cub baseball team that won the state championships in 1986 and 1987.
After graduating from Brenham in 1987, Watts attended Tarleton State University where he played baseball under his former high school coach Lee Driggers from 1987-88. During his time there he earned the distinctions of 1st team All-Conference and the Big Stick Award. Watts later transferred to Blinn to continue playing baseball from 1988-89, where he was named first team all-conference. From there, he finished his college career at Southwestern Louisiana University from 1989-91, where Watts was a member of the All Tournament-Team at Las Vegas’s UNLV Baseball Tournament.
Watts earned a bachelor’s degree in science and later earned his master’s degree from Prairie View A&M in education administration. Watts has been an educator for 29 years and is currently the principal at Brenham Junior High School.
He is married to Fon’Shall Watts also a long time educator. They have three sons: Tyler, who is a 2014 Brenham graduate and an alumni of Texas State University where he played football and earned his bachelors and masters and is currently the Director of Public Relations for the Texas High School Coaches Association; Colby Watts, graduated from Brenham in 2019 and is a student at Sam Houston State University majoring in criminal justice; and Kaden Watts, a 2022 Brenham graduate, who attends Texas State University and is a member of the football team. He is also extremely proud to be the PaPa to his 2-year-old granddaughter Aspyn.
Craig Agnew served as Brenham High School defensive coordinator for the football team from 2003-13. He was defensive line coach in 2014, having turned over the reins to Brett Mouser. He then retired from teaching and coaching.
Agnew has been a football and track coach, a head football coach and an athletic director in schools across Texas since graduating from North Texas State University in 1984. He coached state championship teams in Bartlett as offensive coordinator in 1992 and as head coach in 1999 in addition to coaching in state championship games in Brenham as defensive coordinator in 2009 and 2013. Agnew also played in two state championship games as a Brownwood Lion, losing the championship game in 1977 and winning it in 1978.
He was inducted into Brownwood’s Gordon Wood Hall of Champions in 2005 and was named by legendary high school football coach Gordon Wood to his all-time team. He was a starter for the North Texas State University conference championship team in 1983 and was named the team’s player with the best attitude. He was a member of the 1996 Texas high school all-star selection committee.
Agnew also coached the throwers during track season and enjoyed watching the big guys succeed. He coached current school record holders Luke Poehlmann in the shot put with a record throw of 60’ 4.25” and John Osborne in the discus with a record throw of 177’ 4”. While at Brenham, he coached more than 10 shot putters who threw 50’ or better. He greatly enjoyed watching the fat man relays run a 47.7 to win the Elgin track meet. Runners were Malcom Brown, Austin Schlottmann, Joshua Williams and Roderick Payne, with an accumulated weight of more than 1,000 pounds.
In March 2008, Agnew began attending and testifying before the Texas State Board of Education meetings every other month until January 2010. The purpose was to lobby for athletes to receive four years of credit for four years of participation as other groups, such as band, JROTC, and dance, received, instead of only two years of credit even if they participated for four years.
This was important because, with changes in the credit requirements for graduation in 2010, the athletes were facing the possibility of not being able to participate in athletics during their junior and/or senior years because they would not receive credit for participation those years. Agnew was supported by several athletic associations, and their efforts were successful, to the benefit of not only the Brenham athletes but all athletes across the state of Texas.
Agnew taught social studies, English and physical education classes during his career.
He and Margaret are both retired and live in Temple, where they are very close to their son, Tyler, and his wife, Savannah, and daughter, Peyton; and their daughter, Kellie, and her husband, Matt, live in Brownwood with son, Dylan and daughter, Madalyn.
