WASHINGTON CO. NOT SELECTED FOR COURTHOUSE RESTORATION GRANT

The restoration project for the Washington County Courthouse appears to be on hold for the foreseeable future.

Commissioner Joy Fuchs told KWHI that the county was not chosen to receive a grant from the Texas Historical Commission (THC) that would have funded the project.

In 2018, the county approved an agreement with Architexas to develop a historic master plan.  The agreement involved the preparation of construction documents corresponding with the THC’s Historic Courthouse Preservation Program Planning Grant.

Originally, the county was looking to restore significant interior spaces of the courthouse along with the exterior and the outside landscaping.  However, Fuchs said the county eventually decided to pursue just the exterior and landscaping to start, as the full courthouse would need too much in matching funds in order to secure the grant.

The county will have to wait until next year to apply again for THC grant funding.  A decision has not been made on whether it will do so.
