KELVIN RAVEN SEEKING ANOTHER TERM ON BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD
A longtime member of the Brenham Police Department is running for re-election to the Brenham School Board.
Lt. Kelvin Raven was first elected as a trustee in 2015. Born in Brenham, he has served for 26 years with the Brenham Police Department, including 14 years as a School Resource Officer. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2019.
Raven says he wholeheartedly loves serving the community and wants to continue doing so for Brenham ISD students, families and staff members.
Raven says a priority of his is to ensure teachers are paid more for the work they do in educating future generations.
Raven feels he can be a strong voice for the public on the board.
Raven’s seat is one of four that will be on the ballot during the May 6th school board election. He currently does not have an opponent.
Trustee Dr. Michael Altman is also uncontested at this time, as is Bonnie Brinkmeyer for the position formerly held by Mark Schneider. The one contested race is for the spot held by Susan Jenkins, who is not seeking another term; Artis Edwards Sr. and Kyle Hafner have filed for that position.
The last day to file for candidacy is February 17th.
BISD will never pay like Houston. Student enrollment, everything is completely different. Just because their exceptional teachers doesnt mean we match Houston pay. If that were so our police and fire department pay would be increased also. We are still a small town with growing pains.
You cracked the code! Experienced teachers from BISD, firefighters and police persons are leaving Brenham to seek employment in Cypress, Katy and some venture into Houston. Houston does not have to come to Brenham; Brenham is going to Houston.
I’m surprised at the outcry over “potential” conflicts of interest. For starters any considered pay raises would be across the board and not aimed at individuals. Regardless, every single problem facing society today can only be solved by one thing….EDUCATION! Our teachers should be making 6 figure salaries! Then perhaps our best and brightest would be scrambling to teach rather than taking their talents to other fields. Unfortunately it would appear that many would have us go in the opposite direction with book bans and the like. Having ignorance as a goal is not very laudable. Finally, as an individual Lt. Raven is beyond reproach. We deserve a board full of his ilk.
Good question, Brenhamite…..BUT I feel, Officer Raven would provide a true insight of what educators are faced with daily by living/married to a BISD teacher. I feel he would be a great advocate for teachers.
A trustee that we need. A trustee that cares for all students. A trustee who understands. Raven is the man!
My grown children attended and graduated from Brenham ISD many years ago. They both are young adults now and have fond memories of Officer Raven attending many school functions and the positive impact he has made of them.
I have a quick questions It is allowed that a board member has a spouse that works for the district? Sounds like a big conflict of interest… especially if the board member is voting on pay raises ….Just my two cents
I’m sure they know how to separate business from personal life. Also, one board member’s mother worked for the district for several years, is that considered a conflict of interest also?
I do not understand why this question is even an issue. Every year the citizens of Washington County have complained about the salary of those who work for Brenham ISD and the exodus of wonderful teachers/staff due to the low to median pay wages for BISD (compared to the other ISDs outside of Brenham) and yet you feel like there is a conflict of interest because of his spouse, a spouse that he was and is currently married to when he first ran for the board. If you wish not to vote for the man; then so be it, but please do not sit here and attack this man’s character for doing something you aren’t willing to do yourself (oh my triple negatives in one sentence); let alone have the guts to say we need to do better supporting our teachers and staff. Have a blessed day.
I think that is going to happen regardless in a small community such as Brenham. And if you don’t think these educators need a raise, you should walk in their shoes or keep your comments to yourself. I am quite sure any pay increases would be across the board for the entire district, not just the spouse of a person ELECTED to the school board, which is also a group of people that get to vote on such things, not just one person can approve said pay increase.
Was this an issue during the time that Michael Altman time as a trustee and his mom was employed by Brenham ISD? Here’s the answer to your question: The Texas Association of School Boards’ (TASB) regulations state that as long as the spouse/relative of a member was employed by said district prior to the member’s election or appointment, they may serve. The internet is a great resource that could have easily answered this question for you.
The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) is NOT a governmental body that issues regulations or laws. It is a non-profit association that takes in taxpayer funds from school districts to provide advice and services to its member districts. TASB is best in acting in its own self-interest and promoting its liberal political agenda.
