WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS TO CELEBRATE TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY FEB. 25-26

The birthplace of Texas is getting ready for the 187th anniversary of Texas independence.

The Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site will put on its annual two-day living history celebration on Saturday, February 25th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, February 26th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The celebration commemorates Texas’ declaration of independence from Mexico in 1836.

The admission-free event will have live music, food and demonstrations, as well as sales of traditional crafts like blacksmithing, candle making, wood working and quilting.  In addition, there will be living history presentations, musket and cannon firings, pageantry, children’s activities, museum exhibits and other programs.

Guests will experience historical reenactments of how soldiers and their families lived in 1836 and be able to walk through the tents of a time-accurate Texas Army camp.

Admission fees will be waived during the celebration for the site’s attractions, including Independence Hall, the Star of the Republic Museum and the Barrington Living History Farm.  Entry to the grounds, on-site shuttles and parking will also be free.

Washington-on-the-Brazos will start a $44 million renovation project later this year for many of its facilities and exhibits.  Approximately $34 million of the funding for the project will come from money secured through the Texas Legislature, but a capital campaign will raise the remaining $10 million.
