Former State Representative, Speaker of the House and Washington County Judge Gus Mutscher has died.

Gus Mutscher

Mutscher passed away on Sunday at the age of 90.

Mutscher was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1961 to 1972.  He was elected as the 67th Speaker of the House in 1969.

During Mutscher’s tenure, the House increased state financial support for higher education, mental health, and other state social services.  He was instrumental in the establishment of the Brenham State School, now known as the Brenham State Supported Living Center, bringing jobs and careers to Brenham, and the creation of the Star of the Republic Museum at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park.

Mutscher became the 23rd judge of Washington County in 1977, a position he held until 1990.

Mutscher was named in September as a distinguished alumnus of Brenham ISD, and he was known during his time at Blinn College as “Mr. Buccaneer”.  His efforts on behalf of the college include securing additional funding and growth, as well as the development of its alumni base and Hall of Honor.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with family present from 5 to 7 p.m., at Memorial Oaks Chapel.  Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, with burial following at 3 p.m. at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.

  1. One true Texan who always had the best interest of his friends in Washington County as a top priority. I only wish he would have published his memoirs. What an interesting read that would be.
Rest In peace my friend Mr. Speaker.
