CUBETTES WIN BOTH GAMES ON DAY ONE OF BRENHAM TOURNAMENT
The Brenham Cubette Softball Team got back on the winning track by sweeping both games on the opening day of the Brenham Tournament.
CUBETTES 13 MIDLAND LEGACY 2
In the bottom of the first inning, Avery Maurer led it off with a walk. The birthday girl, Halle Scheel, followed with an RBI triple that scored Maurer with the first run of the game. Two batters later, Sarah Mabie singled to score Scheel and make it 2-0 Cubettes.
Then in the bottom of the second inning, Kinley Antkowiak led it off with a double. Maurer later hit a two run homer to make it 4-0 Brenham. Scheel singled and then later came around to score on a steal of home plate to put the Cubettes up 5-0.
In the third inning, Sarah Mabie had a one-out double. Kinley Antkowiak reached on an error that allowed maybe to score. Riley Meyer then came up with a pinch-hit two-run homer that put Brenham ahead 8-0.
The offensive onslaught continued in the bottom of the fourth. Maurer and Scheel walked. Kaylyn Rodriguez followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Maurer. Scheel later scored on a wild pitch and the Cubettes were up 10-0. Annie Beckendorf walked, and Sarah Mabie doubled. Pinch hitter Nevaeh Holmes was hit by a pitch. Zoe Henderson drew a bases loaded walk that scored Beckendorf. Antkowiak re-entered and ran for Henderson. Gonzales and Antkowiak both scored on errors to increase the lead to 13-0.
Legacy got two runs in the top of the fifth off of winning pitcher Heidi Busker. Della Jasinski came on an got the last two outs.
CUBETTES 8 FORNEY 3
The Brenham Cubettes struck first again in their second game of the day. Avery Maurer started it with a single, stole second, took third on an error, and then scored on an RBI single by Kaylyn Rodriguez. Annie Beckendorf was hit by a pitch. Sarah Mabie then hit a two run double that scored Rodriguez and Beckendorf. Mabie would then score on an RBI single by Kinley Antkowiak to make it 4-0 Cubettes after one inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, Mckenzie Tiemann led it off with a triple, and then would score on an RBI single by Avery Maurer. Maurer would score her second run of the game on an RBI single by Kaylyn Rodriguez. Rodriguez scored on Mabie's second RBI double of the game. Kaylie Rodriguez followed with an RBI triple to put the Cubettes up 8-0.
The Jackrabbits scored two runs in the third and one in fifth to cut the lead to 8-3, but that would be as close as they get. Della Jasinski went the distance striking out eight, including two of the final three batters, to secure the win.
The Cubettes are scheduled to resume play tomorrow (Friday). They will play Shadow Creek at 3pm and Rains at 5pm. KWHI will have live coverage of the game against Rains, beginning with the pregame at 4:35pm.
