BRENHAM VOTERS REMINDED OF NEWLY REDISTRICTED WARDS

  

The Brenham City Council election this spring will be the first one with new ward alignments from the city’s recent redistricting.

Last year, the city adopted a redistricting plan that formally redrew the city’s four council wards to bring them closer together in population.  As a result, some residents and businesses are in a new council ward and are represented by a different councilmember, and will also have a new polling location come Election Day. 

The primary changes to the ward map were to bring up population numbers in Ward 2 and reduce them in Ward 3.  They were done by moving tracts from Ward 3 to Ward 4 and from Ward 1 to Ward 2.

One adjustment takes a tract neighbored to the west by Schuerenberg Street, to the south by Vulcan Street, to the east by Austin Street and to the north by Jefferson Street and moves it from Ward 1 to Ward 2.

A second change moves a tract stretching west to Park Street, south to Seelhorst Street, east to Chappell Hill Street and north to Sycamore Street from Ward 1 to Ward 2.

Another alteration places a piece that starts at Market Street on the west, goes north to Sixth Street and south to Mansfield Street, and ends at Chappell Hill Street on the east inside Ward 4 from Ward 3. 

The only contested race on the council is mayor, which is voted on by the entire city.   

The Washington County Elections Office will be sending out new voter registration cards in the coming weeks that will update affected voters with their new city ward and polling locations. 

Early voting will take place April 24^th through May 2^nd at the Washington County Courthouse Annex.  Election Day is May 6^th.
