BURTON ISD TO GET SECOND SRO

Burton ISD is adding to its security with a second School Resource Officer (SRO).

After an executive session on Tuesday, the Burton School Board approved an interlocal agreement with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office for an additional SRO.

Texas is requiring all school districts to place an armed officer at every campus, per House Bill 3.  Burton ISD’s first SRO began service last year.

The district also uses the Guardian Program, which permits certain district employees to carry handguns on school grounds.

Burton ISD Business Manager Caitlyn Blakey-Staal said the district will be able to cover the salary with an estimate from Washington County of a little over $150,000 for both SROs combined.  The district currently has a safety grant through the Texas Education Agency that will assist with the cost at the start.

Another item in executive session was the budget for the 2023-24 school year.  However, no action was taken, and the item will be brought back to trustees at a special meeting planned for the first week of August.
