BRENHAM LIBRARIAN ARRESTED FOR DWI

Idalia Avezuela
(Washington Co. Jail)

The head of the City of Brenham’s library system was arrested Thursday night on a charge of Driving While Intoxicated.

43-year-old Idalia Perez Avezuela of Brenham was booked into the Washington County Jail after being arrested by Brenham police following a traffic stop at approximately 9:50 p.m. in the 1000 block of South Austin Street.  She was released on $1,500 bond.

Avezuela was formally introduced as the city’s new librarian in December 2021.  She joined the City of Brenham after previously working as the Rosenberg librarian and as the library manager for the Harris County Public Library.

City officials told KWHI they are unable to provide comment on personnel matters. They did confirm that she remains an employee of the city at this time.

  1. And if found guilty of the charges, she’ll be sent to do community service and be assigned to work at the library reshelving books like many of the other low level DUI’s and shoplifters. Sadly, one of the former library employees applied for the job but was turned down because she had not fully completed her master’s degree in library science, but was still working on it. The city said she was not qualified, but yet the librarian prior to this one was hired before completing her master’s degree. Again, our city government is inept and ineffectual, and we see their shortcomings in all areas.

    1. I have never met this lady, but why should they not allow her to keep her job? Most of us do not know the circumstances that led up to this, was it a one-time thing or something that may need help and recovery? We should be careful judging this when we don’t know the facts. This is an arrest; it is not a finding of guilt, and she is not guilty until proven so in court.

I hope the city takes time to consider this carefully before making any harsh employment decisions. She was off duty, not on city time; operating cars is likely not a critical part of a librarian’s job requirement and there is no reason why she should be immediately terminated.

For those who may need it, there are many AA meetings in this area to help people who struggle with alcohol abuse. Go to https://www.aa.org/ for more information. There is hope and help available for anyone who struggles with this!

    2. So you think she should automatically be fired for this? People make mistakes and she if found guilty will pay for hers.
