BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD TO CONSIDER RESOLUTION ON SCHOOL CHAPLAINS
A new state law permitting school districts to allow chaplains to work as school counselors will be one of the points of discussion for the Brenham School Board on Monday.
Trustees will discuss and possibly adopt a resolution regarding chaplains, as required by Senate Bill 763 from the last legislative session.
The law, which became effective September 1st, authorizes districts to employ chaplains to perform the duties required of school counselors, using school safety and security funds, or to accept chaplains as volunteers. The chaplains are not required to be certified by the State Board for Educator Certification.
The law states that each school district board of trustees must take a record vote no more than six months after the law’s effective date on whether to adopt a policy authorizing the hiring of chaplains.
In a related item, trustees will hear from a regional representative from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to discuss how the organization is partnering with local chaplains.
Another item being brought forth is a possible early notification incentive for resignations. According to Acting Superintendent Clay Gillentine, the district is considering giving incentives to contracted/professional employees who notify the district of their resignation early, so that it can better prepare for the next budget cycle.
Other business for trustees will include approving the district’s 2024-25 instructional calendar, potentially renewing the district’s phone system subscription, purchasing a replacement chiller at Brenham Junior High School, and hearing an update on possible advertising revenue sources at Cub Stadium. Last month, the board was informed of a prospective partnership to put in a new customizable LED scoreboard at the stadium in order to generate additional advertising dollars.
There will also be monthly administrative updates and an executive session to go over potential staff changes to budget allocations for the 2024-25 school year.
Prior to the regular session, the board will hold a public hearing for comments on the 2022-23 Texas Academic Performance Report.
The board will meet Monday at 6 p.m. in rooms 111 and 113 at Brenham High School. The meeting will be livestreamed on Brenham ISD’s YouTube channel.
