LA GRANGE ISD CONSIDERING METAL DETECTORS AFTER GUN FOUND ON CAMPUS

An incident of a student being caught with a handgun at La Grange High School earlier this week has led to conversations about possibly bringing metal detectors on campus.

This past Tuesday a 16-year-old male student was arrested for carrying a stolen handgun inside the La Grange High School.

According to La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath, school officials searched the student’s car shortly before the end of the school day, and found marijuana located inside.

When questioning the student, School Resource Officer Jeff Archerd discovered that he was carrying a 9mm handgun with a loaded magazine in the wasteband of his shorts.

After running a check, it was determined that the gun was reported stolen from Jim Wells County.

Chief Gilbreath that the student’s parents are cooperating with the investigation, but so far, he is refusing to answer questions about how he got the gun.

The suspect has been sent to the Victoria County Juvenile Center in Victoria for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm on School Premises, Possession of Stolen Property, and Possession of Marijuana.

La Grange ISD Superintendent Andy McHazlett told the Fayette County Record that they will be bringing up the idea of metal detectors to the school board members.

Currently, La Grange ISD uses metal detector wands at their Disciplinary Alternative Education Program.

McHazlett said that they also would like to visit with other districts to discuss how metal detectors have helped to prevent guns from being brought to school.
