BURTON CITY COUNCIL REPEALS ALCOHOL ORDINANCE
The Burton City Council approved action on Tuesday to repeal an ordinance banning alcohol and alcoholic containers on public property.
The ordinance, first established in 2001, governed the consumption of alcoholic beverages on city property, including city parks, and at local festivals and events.
The unanimous vote to repeal the ordinance follows lengthy discussion at a council workshop on June 4th.
Also in frequent discussion in recent months has been the city’s ordinance for rules and regulations at Laas-Weeren Park, but the park ordinance was not brought up at Tuesday’s meeting, as City Secretary Angela Harrington says the city is waiting on legal advice before proceeding.
In other business on Tuesday, the council passed a resolution to terminate the services contract with Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP for the collection of delinquent property taxes.
The resolution reiterates that the city has given the Washington County Appraisal District the authority to handle all aspects of property tax collection, including the right to choose the firm that handles delinquent taxes. All other Washington County taxing entities are moving into receiving delinquent property tax collection services from Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott, LLP.
Councilmembers also heard a presentation from BEFCO to provide “as-needed” engineering services for the city and received a bid for a new security camera system for Burton City Hall. No action was taken on either item.
