NAVASOTA MAN SENTENCED TO 35 YEARS IN PRISON FOR 2021 MURDER

A Navasota man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after a fatal shooting three years ago.

Leon Burrell, Jr.
(Grimes Co. Jail)

40-year-old Leon Burrell Jr. pleaded guilty to murder on Monday in 12th District Court for the death of 45-year-old Clifton Love of Navasota.

The Grimes County District Attorney’s Office said Navasota police responded on July 14, 2021 to a shooting on Laredo Street.  Love was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, Love told Navasota Police Chief Mike Mize, who was one of the first people to arrive on scene, that it was Burrell who shot him.  Love was flown to a hospital but did not survive his injuries.

Investigators determined that Burrell acted alone at the time of the shooting, and that there was a “history of issues” between the two men.

Grimes County District Attorney Andria Bender said, “There is no place for criminal gun violence in the Grimes County community.”
