CUBS USE BIG THIRD QUARTER TO BEAT BELTON 42-24
The Brenham Cub Football Team overcame a slow start to defeat the Belton Tigers in the final game of the regular season 42-24 at Birkelbach Stadium.
Belton broke a scoreless tie in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Sophomore QB Will Shepherd. The Tigers missed the extra point, but still lead 6-0 with 1:56 left.
Brenham started the second quarter by taking the lead on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Harvey to Chris Guidry. Bleu Cienega made the extra point to give the Cubs a 7-6 lead at the 11:52 mark.
Belton got back on the scoreboard a short time later on a three-yard touchdown run by Kegan Sherwood, and Cole Angell hit the extra point to give the Tigers a 13-7 lead with 10:24 left until halftime.
Shepherd later broke free on a 49-yard touchdown run, and then also ran in the two point conversion to increase the Belton lead to 21-7 with 8:01 left in the second quarter.
Dixon scored his first touchdown of the night on an 18-yard touchdown run with 4:42 left in the half. Cienega nailed the PAT kick to cut the Belton lead to 21-14.
The Tigers got a 30-yard field goal from Angell to take a 24-14 advantage into the locker room at the end of the second quarter.
In the third quarter, it was all Cubs.
Harvey found Tristen Shugart on a 21-yard touchdown pass and after a PAT kick by Cienega, the Belton lead was down to 24-21 with 7:23 left in the third.
On Brenham's next drive, Dixon scored his second touchdown on an eight yard run, and another PAT by Cienega to give the Cubs a 28-24 lead with 5:54 remaining in the third.
It was a lead that they would not relinquish again.
Brenham's next score would come on a blocked punt by Rafael Salgado, and the fumble would be recovered by Ryder Stewart in the end zone for a touchdown. Cienega added another extra point kick, and the Cub lead increased to 35-24 at the 4:35 mark.
For the final score, Dixon broke free on an 83-yard scamper to score his third touchdown of the night, and Cienega made the PAT to give Brenham a 42-24 lead with 59 seconds left in the third quarter.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Although, Belton did have one more drive that took them deep into Cub territory, but Jabreon Moore came up with an interception to seal the deal.
The win improves Brenham to 9-1 overall, and 5-0 in district. Next up, the Cubs move on to the Bi-District Round of the Playoffs, where they will play Texas City next Friday at 7pm at Cub Stadium. KWHI will broadcast the game live beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
