BURTON SCHOOL BOARD ADOPTS 2025-26 CALENDAR, APPROVES ADMINISTRATOR CONTRACTS
The Burton School Board on Monday adopted Burton ISD’s school calendar for the 2025-26 year.
Per the calendar, the first day of class will be Wednesday, August 13th. Students will have off September 17-19 for the county fair and November 24-28 for Thanksgiving. Class will let out early on December 19th for the holidays, with students returning on January 7, 2026.
Spring Break will be March 9-13, 2026. The last day of school will be May 21, 2026, with graduation the following day.
Superintendent Vikki Curry said district staff worked with a calendar committee and shared the proposed calendar with campus leadership, teachers and a site base committee consisting of parent groups. Trustee Mike Clyde asked for the district to put out the calendar options to the full community in the future.
Trustee Dean Fuchs asked if staff development days, which double as student holidays, could be moved around to accommodate any bond construction happening on the campuses. Curry said the district can, as long as it meets the required number of instructional minutes and staff workdays.

Also on Monday, the board approved contract extensions for several administrators. The contracts of Elementary School Principal Melinda Fuchs, High School Principal Micah Goebel, Maintenance/Transportation Director Joseph Brinker, Business Manager Caitlyn Blakey-Staal, and Athletic Director Jason Hodde have all been extended through June 30, 2027.
In other action, trustees approved resolutions to compensate teachers and staff for school days missed due to last month’s winter weather and Thursday’s water outage. They also approved applying for a low attendance day waiver from the state after, according to Curry, there were about 50 high school students and 20-25 elementary school students out last Monday with upper respiratory illnesses.
The board also:
- Approved a set of district goals through House Bill 3, from the 86th Legislature. The goals pertain to College, Career and Military Readiness; Early Childhood; and Reading and Math.
- Approved an order of a school board election for the positions currently held by Demetrius Colvin Sr. and Jeff Harmel on May 3rd. Currently, only Colvin and Harmel have filed for the election.
- Revised the 2024-25 district improvement plan. Curry said the changes are to update language in the plan to meet state requirements regarding the duties of School Resource Officers.
- Approved the student code of conduct and a localized board policy manual update.
