ELECTION 2025: BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL WARD 1

With early voting now less than a week out, KWHI is previewing elections coming up on the May 3rd ballot in Washington County.

Shannan Canales
(City of Brenham)

Today, we look at the Brenham City Council – Ward 1 race between incumbent Shannan Canales and challenger Steve Soman.

Shannan Canales is the Assistant General Manager at KTEX/KWHI Radio and the co-owner of Las Americas Latin Cuisine in downtown Brenham.  She also serves as the board vice president for the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County.

Canales says her goal on the council is to preserve what makes Brenham special while making improvements to utilities and essential services, as well as supporting the city’s public safety departments and local businesses.  She says keeping the city on a path for sustainable growth is a group effort and takes teamwork from all stakeholders.

Steve Soman is the Director of Pharmacy Operations and Solutions for Apex Health Solutions, with previous experience as a pharmacist and operations manager for institutions such as Memorial Hermann and UnitedHealth Group.

At KWHI’s Candidates Forum on April 7th, Soman said some priorities of his include attracting new businesses and ensuring existing ones can succeed, growing the tourism sector, and making cost-of-living more affordable.  He seeks to build a stronger, family-focused future for Brenham by moving forward with strategic plan updates to better manage the city’s opportunities and challenges.

KWHI’s full interview with Canales can be heard below.

Editor's Note: Soman could not be reached for an individual interview, but his comments will be added to this article should he later become available.

  1. Thank you Shannan for taking the time for the interview and having the time to support Brenham and serve on the Council. To me personally when you skip out on something its just not that important kinda like a job interview when you really don’t want the job in the first place but Dad said you need one anyway.
