‘WE LOST A VERY GOOD MAN’; BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL MOURNS LOSS OF BILL BETTS
Members of the Brenham City Council took time at their meeting today (Thursday) to mourn the loss of William H. “Bill” Betts Jr.
Betts, the president and shareholder of Betts, Walters and Mutscher, P.C., passed away on Monday at the age of 69 after a short battle with ALS.
Mayor Atwood Kenjura and Mayor Pro Tem Clint Kolby spoke on their relationship with Betts and his body of work in the community, including his time on the boards of the Brenham Community Development Corporation (BCDC) and Brenham Parks and Recreation. Kenjura said Betts was devoted to the betterment of local parks and that the city has lost “an outstanding individual.”
Betts’ community involvement spanned numerous local organizations, serving as president of Brenham Maifest, a founding board member and organizing director of the Brenham ISD Education Foundation, a two-term director of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, and with the boards of the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County, Blinn College Foundation, Hospice Brazos Valley and Baylor Scott and White.
Kolby said Brenham is a special place because of people like Betts, who was a mentor and friend to Kolby. He said the impact Betts made will be seen and felt well into the future, adding, “We lost a very good man.”
A celebration of life service for Betts is being held tomorrow (Friday) at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Brenham, 304 North Market Street. A reception will be held afterward in the church gym. Guests are encouraged to wear bright colors and bow ties in Betts’ honor.
The council’s comments came as part of discussion on an item to fill Betts’ seat on the BCDC board. The council approved the appointment of Wade Seidel to serve out the remainder of Betts’ term, ending on December 31, 2026. Kolby said he appreciates Seidel’s willingness to serve and continue Betts’ work.
