HUNDREDS GATHER FOR ‘NO KINGS’ PROTEST IN BRENHAM
Brenham residents joined a nationwide protest on Saturday in opposition to President Donald Trump’s policies.
Organizers for the “No Kings” demonstration in Brenham say between 175 and 200 people attended the rally, which took place along the sides of Highway 36 South, just before its meeting point with Highway 290 East.
Crowds gathered with flags and signs in criticism of what they believe to be authoritarian actions by the president. A small group of counter-protestors standing for President Trump stood across the street with their own flags and signs. Vehicles passing by honked their horns in support of both causes.
Tammy Johnson, the organizer of a Facebook group and a past event in support of women’s reproductive rights, said the citizens gathered on Saturday will not stand for discrimination or people’s rights being taken away.
John Deans spoke in support of the Trump administration, saying he is in support of immigrants coming into the United States legally, but feels action is needed for the ones not going through the proper channels.
Rev. Vickie Simons said it was great to see a diverse range of people coming out to express their beliefs, and that it is important to unite in support of a better future for everyone.
Law enforcement officials from multiple agencies maintained a presence at the demonstration, including the Brenham Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington County constables. Officials said the event remained peaceful.
The protest, organized locally by the Democratic Women of Brenham, was one of over 2,000 planned around the United States on Saturday, taking place the same day as a military parade in Washington, D.C. in celebration of the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday. It was also President Trump’s 79th birthday.
