Chief Deputy Jay Petrash told county commissioners today (Tuesday) that the sheriff’s office received multiple reports on Monday concerning scammers who are calling citizens and identifying themselves as a deputy, using the name of a deputy who was formerly employed at the sheriff’s office.

Petrash said the callers tell the victim that they need to show up for court and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.  He said the sheriff’s office will not call about warrants or solicit payment to resolve them.

Petrash said these increases in scam attempts tend to occur in cycles, and right now they appear to be on the rise again.

Anyone who receives a call that seems suspicious is encouraged to report it to the sheriff’s office at 979-277-6251 or another local law enforcement agency.
