BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO POTENTIALLY INCREASE TRASH, RECYCLING RATES

Higher sanitation rates will be considered on Thursday by the Brenham City Council.

The city says Brannon Industrial Group, also known as BVR Waste and Recycling, gave notice in May and has worked with the city on its plans to increase rates for trash and recycling pickup, beginning in October.  Rates are also set to go up at the BVR Collection/Transfer Station.

With the proposed rate changes, residential curbside sanitation and recycling per month would go from $17 to $18.  For seniors, their monthly amount would increase from $12.50 to $13.  An extra cart would cost $10, up from $9.  The cost for brush collection would rise from $17 to $18. The new rates for commercial sanitation would apply a 10 percent increase for services.

Prates for dropping off materials at the Collection/Transfer Station, including tires, brush and waste, would also see increases ranging from $2 to $15.

The city says the new rates are based on analysis of operating costs, risk and markets for materials, as well as ensuring residents are able to fairly dispose of brush and waste, discouraging illegal dumping.  The last rate increase was in 2022.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the council will consider an amendment to the city’s professional services agreement with Strand Associates for the surface water treatment plant rehabilitation and expansion project.  The amendment is to adjust the scope of work, increasing the project’s not-to-exceed amount by $7,500.

Councilmembers will also potentially appoint members to serve on the Capital Improvements Advisory Committee and hold a work session about the passage of House Bill 1522 from the 89th Legislature, which impacts agenda posting requirements through the Open Meetings Act.

The council will later go into executive session to discuss the possible purchase, exchange or acquisition of real property for sanitary sewer improvements and facilities, as well as matters regarding the Brenham Municipal Airport.

The council will meet Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.
