The Brenham Pet Adoption Center hosted a free adoption event on Saturday, in which 11 cats and 13 dogs went to new homes.  Reservations were made for an additional five animals who will be ready for adoption soon.

Animal Services Manager Megan Gray says Saturday was part of a nationwide effort to reduce pet homelessness and bring more awareness to how the Brenham Pet Adoption Center is working to accomplish that.

Up until Saturday, the shelter had been offering discounted adoptions throughout the month of August.  So far this month, including Saturday’s totals, 35 cats and 35 dogs have been adopted, and 11 reservations have been made.  After being at over 100 animals at the shelter, Gray says there are now 83.

Gray encourages families who have just adopted a new pet to be patient and understanding, and to not be afraid to ask questions.

The Clear the Shelters promotion will continue through the rest of the month, as the Brenham Pet Adoption Center has extended its offer of free adoptions until August 31st.

The shelter also offers a foster-to-adopt program, where prospective adopters can take in a pet for a trial period.  Volunteer opportunities are available to assist at the shelter, either hands-on with the animals or with other tasks like cleaning.

For anyone interested in donating, Brenham Animal Services has an item wishlist on its website, https://cityofbrenham.org.  Monetary contributions will also be accepted.

Gray says to be on the lookout for other adoption events and outreach programs as fall approaches.
