Longtime U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul will not run for re-election in 2026.

U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul sits for an
interview at the KWHI studios in Brenham on
August 17, 2021. McCaul has announced he will not
seek re-election in 2026.

The Republican McCaul, who is in his 11th term in Congress, announced on Sunday that he is “ready for a new challenge in 2027” and looks forward to continuing to serve in the realm of national security and foreign policy.

McCaul said it has been “the honor of a lifetime to represent the people of central Texas.”  He added, “My father’s service in World War II inspired me to pursue a life of public service, with a focus on defending our great nation against global threats, and I have been proud to carry out that mission in Congress for more than two decades.”

First elected in 2004, McCaul represents the 10th Congressional District.  It includes Washington and surrounding counties, though a newly adopted congressional map will move several counties that are currently part of District 10 into different districts.

McCaul’s time in Congress has included previously serving as the chair of the House Homeland Security Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
