FOOTBALL PREVIEW: BRENHAM VS. UNIVERSITY
The Brenham Cubs and the Waco University Trojans have a big showdown coming up later tonight (Friday.)
Brenham comes into the game 8-0 overall, and 3-0 in district with wins over Waco, Bryan Rudder, and Killeen Ellison.
University is 5-3 overall, and 3-0 in district. They have wins over Rudder, Belton, and Waco.
Both teams have clinched playoff spots. University can clinch the District 10-5A Division II Championship with a win. The Cubs must beat University this week, and Belton next week to clinch the title.
At the helm of the Brenham Offense is QB Xyran Upshaw (Sr.). Thus far, he has completed 61 of 103 passes for 1,238 yards, 18 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Upshaw also has a QB Rating of 124.9.
RB C.J. Glover (So.) is the team's leading rusher with 109 carries for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns.
WR Chris Guidry is having an incredible Senior season with 39 receptions for 877 yards and 17 touchdowns. Last week, he set a new school record for career receptions and was also named Homecoming King.
WR Cartelle Brown (Sr.) is having a big year as well with 25 receptions for 471 yards, and four touchdowns.
The Cub defense is led by LB Caleb Espinoza (Sr.) and DT Job Rodriguez (Jr.), who each have 47 tackles on the season. Right behind them are LB Kristian Prosper (Sr.) with 43 tackles and LB Brooks Roznovsky (Jr.) with 42 tackles.
University has their own top-notch QB in Savoy Nichols, who is a junior. Nichols has completed 136 of 224 passes for 1,915 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
The Trojans' ground game is led by RB Darrius Thomas (Sr.), who has 82 carries for 365 yards and seven touchdowns. Meanwhile, RB Ray Brown Jr. (Jr.) has 54 carries for 342 yards and three touchdowns.
The receiving corps is led by London Smith, a senior, who has 53 receptions for 859 yards, and 13 touchdowns.
On defense, the leading tackler is LB Joaquin Martinez (Sr.) with 87. He is followed by S LaQuan Hughes Jr., who has 83 tackles.
Head Coach Danny Youngs talked about what the Cubs need to do to be successful.
