HIGH DEMAND FOR BRENHAM ISD SUMMER MEALS; ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Brenham ISD’s summer meal program is shattering expectations.
Brenham ISD’s non-congregate meal program sends children home with ten breakfasts and ten lunches every two weeks. Distribution is at Brenham Middle School between the hours of 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 – 6 p.m., with the next meal pick-up set for this upcoming Monday.
Child Nutrition Director Kasandra Davis says the response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the first meal pick-up last week bringing in over seven times their initial goal of students served.
As a result of the larger-than-anticipated demand, Davis says the district is in need of extra helping hands to package and distribute meals. Additionally, team members are having to work through some logistical challenges, since individual campuses do not have enough food storage space to accommodate this large number of students, but she says the outpouring of support from the community has been “larger than I could have imagined.”
The program is not only for Brenham ISD students, as Brenham ISD Trustee Shawn Koonce says all children 18 and under are eligible. He says this serves as a great opportunity to help local children eat healthier and take stresses away from their families.
Superintendent Clay Gillentine says while Brenham ISD is an academic institution, it is also the hub of the community, meaning it provides much more than education.
