TUMBLEWEED SMITH’S ‘THE SOUND OF TEXAS’ TO AIR FINAL EPISODE JULY 31
A beloved radio program telling stories of Texas is coming to an end.
Bob “Tumbleweed Smith” Lewis, producer of “The Sound of Texas”, announced today (Friday), that the program will be leaving radio airwaves this summer. The program, which provides a glimpse into the life, culture and humor of people and places around Texas, will air its final episode on July 31st after starting on August 1, 1969.
Smith, born in Waco and a resident of Big Spring, says after 57 years, he is ready for a new chapter.
Smith recalls the encounter that led to his program first coming onto KWHI and says he has greatly enjoyed the stories he has been able to tell about Brenham and surrounding areas, as well as across the state.

Smith has earned numerous awards and honors, including a star on the Trail of Fame in the Fort Worth Stockyards, induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, and being named Broadcaster of the Year by the Country Music Association of Texas. He has won several national and international awards for his audio and video productions of features, commercials and documentaries. He is an honorary Admiral in the Texas Navy, and both the Texas Legislature and U.S. Congress have recognized him for preserving Texas history, folklore and humor.
Smith says through “The Sound of Texas”, he has been able to share heartwarming stories, tales about unique characters and events, and chronicles of human spirit and accomplishment.
Smith will continue his speaking engagements, newspaper column and advertising agency. He also plans to finish his third book, do documentaries and work with his archives, which will be digitized and made available to the public at Baylor University’s Department of Oral History. He expressed gratitude to all those who have supported him over the decades, saying it has been “a fantastic run.”
