Brenham ISD is pleased to announce the hiring of Jacob Carlson as the next head baseball coach of the Brenham Cubs.

Carlson brings more than 22 years of collegiate coaching experience and a reputation for developing players and building successful programs, with stops at Nicholls State University, Coffeyville Community College, Odessa College, Blinn College, Howard College, Texas A&M University, UTSA, the University of Louisiana Monroe, and Sam Houston State University. During his time at Texas A&M, the Aggies captured the 2017 SEC Tournament Championship, advanced to two Super Regionals, and made a College World Series appearance. Most recently, Carlson served in various roles with the Texas Twelve organization.

In addition to his coaching experience, Carlson has served as an associate scout for the Kansas City Royals, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Yankees. Throughout his junior college coaching career, he helped more than 65 student-athletes advance to the Division I level, coached 50 Major League Baseball draft selections, and mentored six All-Americans.

Superintendent Clay Gillentine said the district approached the position with the significance it deserves.

"Brenham baseball has a proud history and means a great deal to our school and community, so we approached this process with the significance it deserves," said Gillentine. "We were intentional in identifying the qualities and experience needed to lead this program, and Coach Carlson emerged as an outstanding fit. His experience speaks for itself, but what impressed us most was his commitment to developing young people and investing in the community. We are excited to welcome Jake, Jessica, and their family to Brenham and look forward to the impact they will have on our students, both on and off the field."

Athletic Director Danny Youngs is excited about the experience Carlson brings to the Cub program and the future ahead."Coach Carlson brings a wealth of experience from every level of the game, and we're excited about what he and his family will bring to Brenham," said Youngs. "He has been part of successful programs, understands player development, and values the relationships that are so important to high school athletics. We look forward to seeing him build on the tradition and success that have made Cub baseball special."

While Carlson's coaching resume spans some of the top programs in the state and region, Brenham is familiar territory. He previously served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Blinn College and has maintained strong ties to Washington County.

Carlson and his wife, Jessica (Weynand) Carlson, are excited to return to Brenham and raise their family in the community Jessica proudly calls home. A Brenham High School graduate and former Division I volleyball standout at Texas State University, Jessica is the daughter of David and Rhonda Weynand. Together, Jake and Jessica have three children, Callie (7), Camryn (15 months), and Cru (2 months), and look forward to becoming active members of the Brenham community.

"Jessica and I are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to become part of the Brenham community," said Carlson. "Brenham baseball has a proud tradition built by great coaches, players, and families, and we are humbled to be entrusted with carrying that tradition forward. We are excited to build relationships, invest in young people, and represent Brenham with pride. We can't wait to get to work."

Carlson is expected to begin transitioning into the role immediately and looks forward to connecting with current Cub players and families as preparations begin for the 2027 season. He and his family are excited to become involved in the Brenham community and continue the tradition of excellence that generations of Cub players, coaches, and supporters have built.

Brenham ISD also extends its appreciation to outgoing head coach Chase Wheaton, who recently announced his departure after seven seasons leading his alma mater. Brenham ISD is grateful for his leadership and service and wishes Chase and his family continued success.
