TWO DOWNED AIRCRAFT REPORTS SATURDAY AT BRENHAM MUNICIPAL AIRPORT

  

Washington County first responders were dispatched twice to the Brenham Municipal Airport on Saturday for two downed aircraft. 

At 7:30 a.m., members of the Brenham Fire Department and Salem, Chappell Hill and Meyersville Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to a report of an airplane crash at 3001 Aviation Way.  They found an airplane off the runway and upside down.  Two patients were walking from the aircraft with minor injuries.  Firefighters controlled a fuel leak from the aircraft.

At 1:30 p.m., the Brenham, Salem, Chappell Hill and Meyersville departments went back out to the airport for a report of an airplane crash with fire.  They discovered a helicopter on its side, with the fire extinguished.  The pilot was already out, with EMS on scene treating the patient.  The departments checked for fluids leaking, but none were found.

Investigation is underway into how the accidents occurred. 

Following the first crash, Brenham AeroTech, who leases the old terminal building at the airport and offers a flight training school, stated on social media that the Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will investigate.  In a follow-up post, the company noted that the second accident was separate and was “completely unrelated to Brenham AeroTech.” 

The responses to the downed aircraft were among 12 calls in total for the Brenham Fire Department on Saturday. 

At 12:30 p.m., units were dispatched to the 6200 block of Old Chappell Hill Road for a grass fire.  Members of the Brenham and Chappell Hill departments found about an acre and a half burning.  The Salem and Meyersville departments were called for more boosters to help extinguish the spot fire.  All units returned to service after the fires were extinguished. 

At 3 p.m., another report of a grass fire came in from the 3800 block of Old Chappell Hill Road.  Firefighters found two barns fully involved and requested more units from Chappell Hill and Meyersville.  The barns were extinguished, along with a grass fire.

Close to 3:30 p.m., BFD members went out to a transportation incident at Highway 290 West and Highway 36 North.  There, they found a two-vehicle accident.  The vehicles were in the parking lot, and there were no fluids leaking.

A few minutes after 3:30 p.m., a vehicle fire was called in from Highway 105 and East Blue Bell Road.  Firefighters found a dump trailer with wood burning on the back.  Once the fire was out, units cleared the call.

At 4:45 p.m., the fire department responded to the Mill Creek Residence Hall, 1192 Old Mill Creek Road, for a fire alarm.  Nothing was showing from the exterior of the building, and units found that the alarm had been reset.

Just before 5 p.m., personnel were dispatched to a transportation incident at East Stone Street and South Chappell Hill Street.  They found a two-vehicle accident with no fluids leaking.  EMS was already treating one patient.  After cleaning the roadway, the fire department returned to the station. 

Around 6 p.m., units received a report of a child locked inside a bedroom in the 400 block of East Alamo Street.  When they arrived, they found the child was already out.

Two fire alarms were called in from Sealy Mattress, 1201 Highway 290 West, one around 8:15 p.m. and the other at 9:15 p.m.  Nothing was showing from the outside of the building.  The department reset the alarm and advised an employee that an alarm company would need to come check their system out.  

At 10:30 p.m., a carbon monoxide alarm was reported from a home in the 700 block of Cobble Gate Drive.  There was nothing showing from the outside of the home, and there were no readings on the detector, so the alarm was reset.
