PARENTS CHARGED IN BURLESON CO. AFTER CHILD HOSPITALIZED WITH SEVERE INJURIES
The parents of an infant have been arrested in Burleson County after the child was flown to the hospital in critical condition.
According to the Burleson County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call around 10 p.m. on Wednesday for a choking infant, reportedly from a lodged object in the child’s airway. Dispatchers provided a family member with instructions on how to perform CPR until a deputy made location and assumed life-saving measures.
The child was stabilized and awaited AirMed for transport to a hospital in Temple.
The sheriff’s office reports that deputies observed several signs of severe, potentially life-threatening injuries to the child’s body, including a large contusion to the side of the head, multiple bruises and insect bites across the child.
Investigators gathered information at the residence before traveling to Temple to meet with doctors at the hospital. Once investigators returned and completed their investigation, warrants were obtained for both parents.
21-year-old Joel Reyes and 24-year-old Maria Nava have both been charged with Severe Bodily Injury to a Child and Child Endangerment. Reyes was additionally arrested for an out-of-county motion to revoke probation warrant for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1/1-B, Less Than a Gram.
Reyes and Nava were taken to the Burleson County Jail.
