The fire department has selected Deputy Alyssa Lopez as this year’s beneficiary of the “Share the Flag” fundraiser, presenting Lopez a check for $16,500.
Lopez was conducting a traffic stop in April when an attempt to detain an individual escalated into a physical altercation. According to a release from the Bellville Volunteer Fire Department, during the encounter, the suspect placed the vehicle in drive, pushed Lopez from the vehicle and ran over her lower body.
Half of the proceeds from “Share the Flag” supports the Bellville VFD, with the other half going to a community member facing difficult circumstances.
Bellville VFD Chief Clyde Gordon said, “This flag represents something bigger than any one of us. It represents a community that shows up when someone needs help.”
The department extends its appreciation to all those who have supported “Share the Flag” throughout the years and plans to continue the tradition for years to come.
