BISD SCHOOL BOARD SETS LEGISLATIVE AGENDA
The Brenham Independent School District Board of Trustees met on Monday to set the school district’s legislative agenda.
The agenda includes items they would like to see addressed by lawmakers in Austin next year. Natalie Lange, the President of the Board of Trustees, said that it’s important to let the lawmakers know what Brenham students need. The Board of Trustees named their legislative priorities as:
- The BISD Board of Trustees vigorously opposes the A-F school rating system.
- The Board of Trustees wants lawmakers to ensure adequate public school funding.
- The BISD School Board wants STARR testing to play less of a role in schools.
- BISD Board of Trustees opposes any bill that promotes vouchers being used to fund charter schools.
- The Board of Trustees opposes any public school funds being used to support private or parochial schools.
- The BISD Board of Trustees encourages the strengthening of the university systems in Texas.
The BISD Board of Trustee’s Vice President, Melvin Ehlert, said this is an important time to recognize these priorities as Brenham Public Schools are getting less funding than they were in 2011, yet STARR testing is becoming harder. Ehlert went on to say that the schools are “being asked to excel, without the proper funding”.

Just so you know, Brenham ISD, most others gets the legislative agenda directive from the Texas Association of School Boards.
It really doesn’t matter where it originated- it’s all about more money, more taxes, greater waste.
Unbelievable, so our elected officials are just following along like little puppy dogs doing whatever they are told! Just because the Texas Association of School Boards believes accountability, results oriented education objectives, and school choice are wrong does not mean our elected officials have to agree to it. We elect these people to lead, not become followers. I keep wandering when they are actually going to do things to make our students and our teachers lives better so that education in this county returns to it’s high standards from many years ago.
What an interesting list:
4.BISD Board of Trustees opposes any bill that promotes vouchers being used to fund charter schools.
5.The Board of Trustees opposes any public school funds being used to support private or parochial schools.
I am just curious to know if these elected officials actually consulted their constituents before becoming advocates against school choice. Why not make our schools GREAT so that people would not want or desire to send their child to a charter or private school? Why not fix the broken curriculum and the out of control chaos we see because discipline is not enforced? How about giving the teachers the compensation, supplies, and equipment they need so they can do their job well (it is ridiculous that teachers are having to buy their own paper and classroom supplies out of their own money, this would be completely unacceptable with any other employer)? Why do we keep hiring all these useless specialist positions and central office staff instead of investing in classrooms. Quit fighting against accountability and objective measurements of school performance. Fix these issues and people will not want to leave the public schools for charter or private schools. It is amazing how insecure people become when their hold on power is threatened by free market competition where results matter more than the politics.
What a disappointment this list was to read! If these are really their priorities, these are the saddest and most misplaced priorities I have ever seen.
